Role of Web 2.0 and personalization in making search effective

Role of Web 2.0 in making Search engines effective is very important. Search engines can do a lot of stuff in the background to make a better UI without cluttering the search result page. Some new search engines are even using multimedia technologies like flash and silverlight, they look cool but I am not sure how effective they are? They look like marketing stunts to show off they are different because they have some cool way of interaction. Use of clean designs using Web 2.0 looks like a more viable way to represent information.

Other interesting area is personalization of search results. When I say personalization I don't mean customization which is getting very common these days. By Personalization I mean look at the log data, including sessions, clicks etc to personalize based on the user intentions and behavior to provide a customized ranking of results.

Combination of Web 2.0 and personalization are some of the things which we will see in future search engines.
