I recently attended WWW2007 Conference in Banff and someone during a Plenary talks said that we have almost perfected our organic results now our goal is to perfect the econmic incentives around them like paid advertisements. I don't agree with this vision, I see there is still lots of room for growth, the search industry has just scratched the surface. This is the most interesting time in the Information retreival side with industry and academics all looking at the next search technology to get an edge or prove there metal in the industry.
I think based on Web 2.0 the next obvious step will be providing a platform for search to users and let them build on top of and take care of spam, personalized ranking based on there search behavior, relevancy, deep web crawling etc. With AMD quad core chips coming to desktops and fiber based residential connections I think that is the future for next generation applications including Search Engines.
